Hello all, This is my first attempt of installing Mandrake. I used to use RH (since 6.1) until I could not get 7.2 to work. I believe this problem is the same one I had with RH 7.2
I have installed Mandrake 8.1 with no problems what so ever. Very nice GUI also! System it is installed on: dual boot (M$ Win98se as other OS) Dell OptiPlex GX1p P3 500Mhz 256Mb ram Radeon 32mb SDR (with a onboard ATI Rage Pro 8mb which is not installed thru Windoz...there is no way to disable the onboard graphics according to Dell. When Mandrake install prompted which video card to use, I selected the Radeon) Cornea 17 inch flat screen (MP703) Turtle Beach Montego sound card (Aureal chip, I am aware of this problem and have fixed it on RH before) The problem I have is after booting into Linux I get a few screens of (OK)'s as to what's being installed, but then when I believe the login screen should appear, all I get is a cursor which is not frozen, on a blank or black screen. I do enjoy the ability (compared to RH) to be able to boot Linux into other modes from the LILO screen. I tried a few different boot modes (forgive my Linux slang) and in one of them I did see a notice that said "ERROR" instead of "OK" concerning Sympa or something close to that but I do not believe that has anything to do with my blank screen problem. I have a feeling it might be something related to DRI support, but have not found anything so far (there are alot of messages in this mailing list!) to say that is my exact problem, other than this particular video card does present some problems for Linux - but it sounds like it can be dealt with. Any clues to help a really new Mandrake newbie would be very appreciated! TIA Steve
