linux can still be lean and mean. but if you want user friendliness, then you have to be prepared for bloated memory hungry desktops and gui's. however after some time you tend to do away with the frills. Load only what is needed, recompile the kernel and remove what you don't need. and pretty soon you end up with a system that is functional, comfortable and productive. sort of like my old pillow :o) +mario
