Ooo...Ooo...I know!
Boot from the install CD, hit F1 on the first screen, then on the boot: prompt type "rescue". You should get a menu come up after a few moments later with one of the items being "Restore Boot Loader". Choose the "Restore Boot Loader" menu item. I've done this with the 8.2beta1 CD's so I'm assuming here that the 8.1 CD's have this neat feature. In case the 8.1 CD's don't have this cool menu to do this for you then when you type rescue on the boot prompt it will mount your Linux installation under /mnt. You will then have to "cd" to /mnt/sbin and re-run lilo from there to restore your boot loader. If that doesn't work then there is a third option available before throwing out the bathwater. Run another installation on the machine only choose "0" (zero) packages to be installed. It will go through the entire installation and likely only install as many as four packages for a grand total of 6MB. DO NOT format any of the drives. Diskdrake will come up and want you to define your partitions. Have no fear in doing this since you're telling it to do something that is already done in exactly the same place and manner. As long as you define your partitions as they already exist it will hurt nothing. As you get to the end of the package installation portion you'll come to the part where you give the root password...yada, yada, yada...now the important part. Making a "boot" disk and installing the boot loader. When this is complete then just finish the installation as you normally would and you're done. In the future though it's always a good idea to make sure that if you're going to run a dual boot machine know that Windows likes to be the first thing on the drive. Especially if you're running something like Win2K, which is the same as NT5. Mandrake will go on the same drive nicely behind the winders install and not think anything of it. Of course the ideal here is not to have Windows on the drive at all, but if you must then it should be on the drive first. That means you've got to install "it" first and any other OS's after. And Always! make a boot floppy with your Linux installations in case Lilo gets hosed as it has in this situation. good luck... -- daRcmaTTeR Registered Linux User #182496 Mandrake 8.2beta1 --------------------------------------------------------------------- 9:05am up 16:33, 2 users, load average: 1.05, 1.05, 1.01
