Yes. Open a console, then raise yourself as root:
su [enter]
type in the root password [enter]
tail -f /var/log/messages [enter]

Then open up the mandrake control center again and test the modem. You'll see 
in the console window whether there are any error about the modem. Copy paste 
the message here, so we can figure out what happen.
