Hmm, I guess I figured you see if eth0 was listed by ifconfig and that
you had and IP address (listed as inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX), just so
you could use that information to further your debugging efforts.

In the Mandrake control center (I'm not sitting at a mandrake box at the
moment so I'm going from memory) I believe there is a section called
system, or services (or maybe system then inside there a section called
services). In there you should find a list of services and there in an
indication whether the service is currently running and whether it is
set to start at boot or not.

Incidently you can also check this list from the command line by typing:

/sbin/chkconfig --list

This doesn't tell you whether each service is currently running or not,
the on/off tells you whether it is set to start at boot in that
run-level. For example the line:

network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

means networking will be started in run levels 2 through 5 (run level 5
is what your normally use). I don't know if knoppix has a chkconfig
command, someone who knows more about knoppix (or debian I guess) can
probably tell you the easiest way to see what is supposed to start at
boot in knoppix.

I hope that helps you.
