The problem was pretty much universal.  I snooped around quite a bit
looking for repositories to add to my sources, but most Suse
repositories were pretty limited in the variety of software.  My guess
was that this was to prevent some of their 'enterprise' customers from
getting things that they hadn't 'certified' in Suse and having
problems and then complaining about it.  The whole idea of giving
people a little bit of rope, but not quite enough to hang
themselves...
