--------------------------------- [16] Pinnochio blows his own trumpet --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: On the Championship: 'Some people may feel it is between United and Arsenal, but we are going to have a big say in it. 'Surely even Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger would concede that it is going to be very tight, and we are certainly in the running. No one should write us off.' --------------------------------- [15] Bobby: No embarrassment on U turn --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: 'I believed that he would leave,' said Charlton. 'I didn't think there was any way back. I didn't ask him to reconsider as he's his own man. 'I guess he must have been worried about what he would do. He's a football man, it's in his blood. Playing golf and going to the races is all very well but it's no substitute for football. 'We're not embarrassed by what has happened. We are delighted.' --------------------------------- [14] Sir Combover compares Fergie to Sir Matt --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: 'Both will go down as great managers. Sir Matt achieved a lot, but what Sir Alex has done here is phenomenal. He is the best thing that has ever happened to this club. 'From the moment he came here 15 or so years ago he wanted to be a winner. He walked in, looked around and said that being second class was never going to be good enough. 'He wanted to win everything from the start. That was all that concerned him. He wanted the League, he wanted the FA Cup and he wanted the European Cup. He's done the lot. 'He has managed to put that enthusiasm and that drive into everybody. He has made everybody feel the same way - the players and all the staff. 'This is the biggest and the best football club in the world and it's down to him.' --------------------------------- [13] O Dreary: Better if they'd been found guilty --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: O'Dreary on Bowyer and Woodgate "It would have made it easier if they had both gone inside. The law of the land had to sort it out but after the courts had dealt with it we got the backlash. It would be better for us if they'd gone inside." I'd like to be a fly on the sheep's dressing room wall for the next game! --------------------------------- [12] OPTA stats for the Rams --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: Them first 27 Games 28 ATTACKING 21 Goals scored 67 0.78 Ave goals per game 2.39 46% Shooting Accuracy 48% 9% Goals to shots % 16% PASSING 9,558 Passes 14,980 71% Pass completion % 81% DEFENDING 73% Tackle success rate % 70% 43 Goals conceded 35 1.59 Ave goals conceded per game 1.25 DISCIPLINE 396 Fouls 380 53 Yellow cards 36 3 Red cards 1 7,960 Opta Index Score 11,809 --------------------------------- [11] O'Dreary alerts the Child Support Agency --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by tb: "I won't be afraid to break up this team - and I hope I will be given the backing to do that. --------------------------------- [10] Nice price... --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: A 10 issue UK subscription to Red News costs just £16.50. The sort of injury he had is not the terrible one it used to be, with all the knowledge of it now. Nonetheless, you still have to come back from it and I don't think he has missed a training session." --------------------------------- [7] Fergie on crucial Newcastle-Arse game --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: "Both of them losing would be a great result. I'd prefer Newcastle to win, but their home record is fantastic and you can't count out either them or Liverpool. We can't afford to slip up but I know mistakes will be made and the important thing is how you handle them." --------------------------------- [6] Arsenal league game could be last week of the season --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: Fergie "If Arsenal get to the FA Cup semi-finals then the game would have to be put back and there aren't too many dates left. I would certainly be happy for it to go to the last game of the season at Old Trafford." --------------------------------- [5] Posh Spice gets it --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Ananova One of Victoria Beckham's former teachers says she has only become a star through luck. She told a TV documentary that Posh Spice has managed to succeed with far less talent than other pupils. In the show, Victoria criticises Kylie's single Can't Get You Out Of My Head in the show Being Victoria Beckham, to be broadcast on ITV1 on Monday. Teacher Joy Spriggs says: "If Victoria hadn't had the lucky breaks that she had and the people having faith in her to make her what she is, she probably would have been singing and dancing on a cruise liner. There are lots of girls with more talent, I'm being quite honest here, that are doing less than Victoria's doing." She said: "When I first heard that record, if I'm being totally honest, I didn't like it. I like a song that has lyrics, a good melody. I can't dispute that it has a catchy feel but I like a song that has a bit of emotion." The warts-and-all documentary also portrays the singer's complexion in a less than flattering light. Her mum Jackie says: "Spots were always the plague of her life - we tried everything known to man." Victoria admits: "I have got facial hair as well - oh, I shouldn't have said that. When I was at school I was a complete minger. I had permed hair, the lot. Not the best looking." She also reveals her earliest inspiration was Barry Manilow but wishes it was someone "cooler." She says: "Barry Manilow is definitely my inspiration - I wish it had been someone a bit cooler. But it wasn't until I saw Fame that I thought 'That is it, that is what I want to do." She also talks about the real reason why she has nothing more to do with former bandmate Geri Halliwell. She said the lack of communication followed an untrue story about her husband David Beckham having an affair. Victoria said: "All the other girls phoned me and were really, really supportive. Geri knew me very well as well and she knew how that would have made me feel. We had had dinner in St Tropez so it wasn't as if I hadn't spoken to her for a long time and I was very, very surprised that she didn't call. When she didn't call, in my mind, that's when I said 'that's that' because I would have called her." --------------------------------- [4] Wenger thinks they can do OUR treble --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: Dream on "I believe we can do it. Of course, it will be very difficult but the belief is a realistic one. We are not stupid because there's a long way to go but we have the determination and the desire is definitely there. We are getting closer and closer." --------------------------------- [3] Squads for Sunday --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: Derby (from): Oakes, Grenet, Barton, Higginbotham, Zavagno, Riggott, Ducrocq, Boertien, Valakari, Lee, Kinkladze, Morris, Strupar, Christie, Ravanelli, Foletti, Carbonari, Elliott. But check this out from the official site: 'United have confirmed the dates of their pre-season tour of Norway and Holland. The Reds will play in a Norway Cup match against a local Oslo team, yet to be confirmed, on 30 July to celebrate the 30th birthday of the tournament. Around 30,000 fans are expected to fill the Ullevi Stadium. On 2 and 4 August, the Reds will be in Amsterdam to play at the ArenA in the four-team Ajax tournament. On 6 August, the lads will go back to Norway to play a local side in Copenhagen. No kick-off times have yet been announced.' Errr... Their geography doesn't seem too good, since the Ullevi is in Gothenburg, presumably they mean the Ullevaal. As to the last match, I can't see why they'd play a Copenhagen team in Norway, but I suppose it's not inconceivable! --------------------------------- [1] Youth team lose --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, March 2, 2002 by bar-knee: Lost to Barnsley in the Qtr Finals of the Youth Cup last night. 3-1 on penalties after drawing 3-3 after extra time. About 5,000 Reds there with 500 odd Barnsley fans.
