The "mini apes" you describe are, to me, not "apes" at all.  Just a reasonable 
relocation of the bars to accommodate us "Westerners; " after all, Japanese are 
shorter than we are, and so without the mods the riding position is a bit of a 
lean forward.  Not like these bars which have a person's hands almost 
stretching to the max over his head...
I wish I would have known about that kind of bar when I had my 550 Four in 
P.R.  My back would be sore after a long ride...

The bars I currently have on my 'hawk are 10" tall with 10" sweep
back. That, coupled with the CB crashbar and highway pegs, makes it a
lot more comfy to ride.
