Louder after market pipes may make it seem like it is lugging some.

My Goldwing (GL1200) seems to be lugging under 2860 (approx) rpms in
5th (OD). It seems to smooth out over 60 mph. Any one with a Wing
agree with that? I think a 17 tooth sprocket on my 750 would help as
well, Graham

My 750 has it's best power above 7000RPM.

Welcome!
I don't have a 750, I have a 450 NH - but I believe the same
thing applies - my cruising RPM was about 4-4500 RPM.
I believe you'll find that there isn't much power above the
5-6000 range so there isn't a reason to run up there.
In general the only thing you lose by running the engine
at a
higher RPM is gas mileage - as long as you aren't running the engine
up to or near the red line, you should be fine.
