I know this is an older topic, but I wasn't sure if I should post
something new as this is related. Again, I'm very new to riding; I've
been riding back and forth to work for about a week, after taking the
safety course, so in terms of miles, I've probably only been, well,
less than 200 miles on my bike. One of the things that I'm really
getting used to is the idea/feeling of when to shift, what the engine
should sound like, etc. I've driven a manual car for years, so
understand the basic concept, but the NH 250 sounds kind of strange
sometimes.

When I took the MSF course, I was fortunate enough to be able to drive
a NH almost identical to the bike I purchased. As I was riding around,
I noted what it sounded like and my bike sounds very similar, though
with that in mind, in the beginner course you stay in 1st and 2nd
gear. My bike doesn't have a tach, and I do think I'm doing everything
as I should, but without a tach, other than general enjoy noise, is
there a way to discern when I should be shifting? After riding a bit,
I started feeling as though maybe I've been shifting too early, but
with the engine so close, so present and loud, I guess I was just
prompted to shift. Anyway, I know this is probably the most basic of
questions, but I thought I'd ask all the same. As silly as it sounds,
getting used to the noises my bike makes and not knowing if those are
appropriate noises, noises the bike should make, well I've found that
one of the most difficult parts of riding.

And if this should be a new post, just let me know.

Thanks,
Max
