My 82 750, ran at 6000 rpm at 70mph.  Always felt like it needed another gear.
I dropped 3 teeth to 40 on the rear last summer when I changed the sprockets
and
chain and now its at 5000 at 70.  Better mileage, and less work for the
engine.
In 82, when I bought this bike the max speed nationwide was 55mph. My speedo on
goes to 85 mph. So I think it was meant to cruise around 4000 to 5000 at the
speed limit at that time.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] RPM's and cruising (or shifting) speed

I have a '92 750 nighthawk.  I see it redlines at, i think it's 8500.
When i'm riding at a more or less constant speed, what rpms is
optimal?  I feel like around 4k is right, partly because that's where
it seems designed to be at when i'm cruising in 5th gear at highway
speed.

When I am accelerating, I often go above that briefly.  When i get to
around 6k +, am I being hard on the engine?  Would it be ok to cruise
at 6 or 7K for extended periods?

Thanks.
