I put in some Lucas every time I change the oil. It helps in the long run. The same thing happened to me going from Tampa to Pigeon Forge. I put in at least half a quart. What can happen is that, especially on these older Nighthawks, you get some blow-by in your engine. You should always check your oil before a run, during a run, and after a run. I looked through prior posts, so I hope I am not asking something that has been answered elsewhere. So, my 1991 cb 750 has been great. I change the oil regularly. Last oil change was about 2 months ago. A few weeks ago, I rode the bike from Seattle to Walla Walla--about 275 miles each way. It was the longest, hardest riding I have done on this bike, and it was great. But, just now, I stopped for gas. After I filled up the tank, the bike wouldn't start. It was as if I had the kill switch on, but I didn't. So, I checked the oil and it was LOW. I added an entire quart before it got full!!!! Yikes!!! I know I do not have a leak. Am I burning oil?
