I was 16 out partying with my dads truck and camper. As kids do I had
the stereo blasting all weekend. However I was using the truck stereo
not the camper stereo so I had to have the key on. What I didn't know
then ( I wire mine differently now) was that by having the key on I
was hooked to both batts. Long story short you can push start a truck
and camper backwards using reverse if you're determined enough.
[OT] if you wire your second batt (RV trailer winch etc) with a relay
use a 5psi oil pressure switch (normal idiot light) to trigger the
relay. That way the vehicle actually has to be running before the
batts are connected. A friend much smarter than I has a design that
only hooks them together if the alt is charging. If you bust a belt
or something else goes bad you don't suck your second batt dead. Thus
your primary goes bad telling you there is a problem, fix (temp or
otherwise) the problem, start truck with second batt. Sux when you
shut off after a 10 hour drive in the snow/rain then stop to find out
all your batts are dead. However it's nice to know with my alt
disconnected I have enough batt to drive for 6 or so hours in the rain.

I push start the gl1200 in 1st all the time. But i have to (in

+1 you need to be in 2nd gear or higher. The gear ratio is too high
in first on any bike/car.

No, it is just that the gearing is such (on my 700SC anyway), running and
popping the clutch in 1st just locks the rear wheel and does not turn the
engine over.
I once spent some frustrating time doing this until I woke up and put it
into third gear and then I was able to run, pop the clutch and have the
engine turn over and start.

Bad clutch?

Before either jumper cables or either the question must be asked... Is it
turning over? You mentioned that the rear wheel locks up when you try and
push start it. That to me suggests that the engine might be seized or
hydrolocked.
Pull the plugs, put it in a tall gear (3-6) and push with the clutch out. If
it doesn't push easily you have bad things wrong. If water or fuel gush out
of the plug holes you have bad(water) minor(fuel) problems to deal with as
long as you haven't bent a rod from trying to start it.
After all that once you have a motor that turns over go ahead and jump it.
Make sure the cables go to the bike batt, against the jumper cable rules but
a bike can't trap gasses and your bike batt will protect the rest of the
system from 99% of the badness that could result from using a 1500cca batt
to jump it. All my ATV's and lawn mowers got jumped for the first start of
the season to clean the cobwebs without putting too much load on the little
batt. I now know that improper batt storage was some of my problem but first
of the season starts always seem to take way more cranking than the rest of
the year.
Oh and don't jump it off a 24v bus unless you really know what your doing
;o)

You might want to consider replacing it, we have seen that be the source of
non running conditions before. I know I'll start a fight saying this but try
jumpering it to a car battery and see if it will start then.

- Same battery, charged up.
- I am sitting on it. I've push-started it several times last year when I
had a bad starter (which I also replaced).
