It would be better to use a good pair of locking pliers (vise grips) if there's 
enough meat on the plug.  Tap it sharply with a small hammer directly on the 
head.   Get a good bind on it and it should come off when you spin it - in the 
right direction, of course.

Also if it is chewed up and you can not get a wrench on it, last resort, you
can use a chisel and a hammer to loosen it up.

OP: Not intended to suggest you're less than intelligent, but perhaps if
you're reefing on it hard and it's not moving you're doing what I've done so
