First congrats and welcome. Parts - original parts can be found on eBay. Other parts that are made today Bike Bandit. They are competitive priced and easy returns if needed. Plus if you're an AMA member you get a discount.
Given what the PO did to your bike I'd replace the battery anyway. Batteries don't last that long on a motorcycle and once you get everything sorted out it would really suck to get stranded because the old battery fails. I have an ST1100 that the PO messed up the wiring. After 2 years I have finally gotten everything solid and reliable. The battery was failing and I replaced it but it was the alternator. My "spare" battery is still good but I don't trust it.
