On a couple of occasions the spark plug valleys were so full of stones and rust and stuff that the initial compressed air treatment didn't remove a whole lot. So I used a stiff piece of wire with the plugs still in place, to dislodge the crud. Even then, because of the width of the plugs I couldn't get out all the junk that could fall into the cylinders. I then blew out everything I could, removed the plugs and replaced them with pieces of downing I had trimmed to wedge into the spark plug holes. With them in place I was able to scratch out and blow away the remaining crud.
