I'm interested in this noisy lens business too. I know that the AF lenses
tend to be loose for AF purposes, but my noisy lens is a MF 105/2.5. I also
know that you shouldn't shake a lens to begin with. But I don't shake the
thing like a gourd; all I have to do is turn it side to side, like I would
if I was
looking at the rear element and then I decided to look at it from another
angle. It does in fact sound somewhat like a small ball bearing rolling for
an instant: tilt, zzip- tilt, zzip. . .
I've never been overly concerned about this sound, because the lens has
always worked well and made fine pictures. After the recent postings
however
I must admit I'm curious.
It's true that the design of some lenses makes them a little noisy. But has
anybody out there ever had a lens make noise that it's not supposed to?

I hold the lens in my hand and rotate my wrist, I can hear what sounds like
a ball bearing rattling around inside. On occasion, this "thing" prevents
me from pulling the zoom all the way back to 70mm. It even once seemed to
stop the autofocus from turing the focusing barrel. If I slowly rotate the
camera back and forth along the lens' axis, the full range of motion is
restored."
