"...I work myself out of some positions because I completely automate the functions I provided. But I can always provide value in another arena."
This is the mindset of how I work! I try hard to "eliminate my position" because I view it as one measure of success - the less things *I* have to do to have some function happen, the less it costs whomever is paying me and I get the next challenge to work on. I don't sell hardware. That's not my business. The only hardware that I buy is for my employees, myself, and our lab. But if one of my customers (that would be management or end-user in your case) asks me the ballpark figure for a server or a workstation or a laptop - I can certainly answer that question. That's part of the value I provide. I can even compare/contrast against upkeep of older hardware & software vs. upkeep of newer hardware & software; including both soft-costs and hard-costs. It's MY JOB to provide value. Over time, I work myself out of some positions because I completely automate the functions I provided. But I can always provide value in another arena. In my opinion, that's the basic tenet of any service professional. Regards, Michael B. Are you REALLY going to go to all the trouble of spec-ing it out and pricing it, if you know there's not a snowball's chance in hell of being able to buy it? I seriously doubt it. If/when management wants a price for a new PC, I can get them one in a very short time by going to the Dell Premier website. That at least gets them a very good estimation of what it's going to cost (might be able to knock a few bucks off here and there, but it's pretty close to what it's going to cost.) I, for one, see no need to go through the heartburn of configuring a new desktop machine that Management isn't going to approve. ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin
