Indeed*- we are looking at a huge SSD backed SAN for a high perf OLTP database. The front-end is just a large-ish cluster of dual quad-core 1U boxes.
Something like this is probably the ultimate: http://www.texmemsys.com/products/details/73 Apparently 14,000,000m IOPS/sec and 140GB/sec transfer. The only limitation is mass storage. The disk I/O limitations can be overcome with sufficient bandwidth to a backend SAN (which can provide the necessary I/O). All your front ends need to do is provide enough memory and CPU. 10 years ago - different story. Cheers Ken From: Steven M. Not that I really feel that large DB's are a great match for a VM'd environment, it's just their stance that sticks in my craw. -sc From: Andrew S. Oh, some of us do use it. It's very nice actually. We just don't use it in production.
