Indeed*- we are looking at a huge SSD backed SAN for a high perf OLTP database.
The front-end is just a large-ish cluster of dual quad-core 1U boxes.

Something like this is probably the ultimate:
http://www.texmemsys.com/products/details/73 Apparently 14,000,000m IOPS/sec
and 140GB/sec transfer. The only limitation is mass storage.

Agreed... hence the "large" DBs statement... but you are right that size is
getting "larger" all the time...

In general these days, you can certainly virtualise DBs - except maybe the
highest end DBs. The disk I/O limitations can be overcome with sufficient
bandwidth to a backend SAN (which can provide the necessary I/O). All your
front ends need to do is provide enough memory and CPU. 10 years ago -
different story.

Please forgive my hyperbole... but yeah... not a lot of production
installations I've heard of.

Not that I really feel that large DB's are a great match for a VM'd
environment, it's just their stance that sticks in my craw.

Oh, some of us do use it. It's very nice actually. We just don't use it in
production.
