I was at Floyd Bennet Field last night for moth surveying (but didn't find
the Baird's Sandpiper in the dark). I came across a sign that gave phone
number 718-358-4500 for information regarding Monday opening. No telling
when such information would be available. Expecting limited, if any, access
to the beaches, this is one of the bay sites I've thought about for Monday
and would want to go early. With already ample rain pools there, displaced
shorebirds could be expected (if not the sexier seabirds we'd rather be
looking for). The West Pond at the Wildlife Refuge should also be on the
radar, although shorefront landing spots for birds that require that could
be problematic. From a physical standpoint, I don't think access to the
refuge could be prevented. While this is in the so called Zone A for
mandatory evacuation, I would think driving to the refuge Monday should be
permissible (depending of course on driving conditions) (but I'm guessing).
If anyone has other ideas of where birding could be done, I'm sure we'd all
like to hear.

Steve Walter

They always close early for storms and any sign of bad weather. During last
winter's snowstorm they were closed for an extra day after everyone else was
back to work. They'll probably take Monday off as well. Your government (
not) at work ! Don
