Greetings! This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
August 06 , 2012

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     8/7: BLACK TERNS continue at Tschache Pool. A WILSON’S PHALAROPE and at 
least 20 (plobably SHORT-BILLED) DOWITCHERS were seen at Knox-Marsellus Pool. 
     8/9: The immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was relocated at the 
beginning of Towpath Road.
     8/10: A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen in Knox-Marsellus Pool from East 
Road.


Oswego County
------------

     8/6: The SANDWICH TERN was again seen on the sand bar at Sandy Pond. 
Viewers were looking from Green Point Marina. Also seen were a WHIMBREL and a 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was again seen along Rt.49 near 
Pam’s Grill in Constantia.
     8/7: 2 GREAT EGRETS were seen in the wetland on Co. Rt. 6 north of Co. 
Rt.3 in the Town of Volnay. GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER, and 
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS have started to show up at the pond at the corner of Rt.264 
and Biddlecum Road. This traditional shorebird spot has been inactive in recent 
years due to high water levels.
     8/10: A GREAT EGRET was spotted at the Greenview golf course on Rt.49 in 
Hastings.
     8/11: 7 raptor species were seen moving around from Derby Hill.
     8/12: More shorebird species have shown up at the Biddlecum Road pond. New 
species were KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED 
SANDPIPER, and WILSON’S SNIPE. 2 GREAT EGRETS, AMERICAN BITTERN, COMMON 
GALLINULE, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and SOLITARY SANDPIPER were seen at the Rt.6 
wetland. A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and 6 species of Warbler were seen at a 
residence in Mexico.


Onondaga County
------------

     8/7: A MERLIN was seen at Shiller Park in the city of Syracuse. A 
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at the marina in Liverpool on Onondaga Lake.
     8/12: 2 RED CROSSBILLS were seen on Shakham Road near the Cortland County 
border. 2 GREAT EGRETS were spotted on No. 2 East Road in the Town of Ponpey.


Madison County
------------

     8/11: A CHIMNEY SWIFT roost has been found at the abandoned Oneida Hoter 
in Oneida. On the 11th. more than 240 birds were seen entering the chimney. On 
the 12th. 355 birds were counted. 


Oneida County
------------

     8/11: Conditions for shorebirds at Delta Lake are favorable this year. 
This is another traditional spot which has been unproductive in recent years. 
On this day 80 SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS and 40 LEAST SANDPIPERS were counted. 
LESSER YELLOWLEGS and SOLITARY SANDPIPER were also noted. In addition 4 GREAT 
EGRETS, 3 BALD EAGLES, and a MERLIN were also seen.
