It's easy to write an app that'll chew memory... That's what you get for loading a
heavy-weight like excel and then asking it to do a naturally memmory intensive
task... It's likely in newer versions of Access that conversions are streamed to a
file but it wouldn't surprise me if the older versions did an in memory conversion
unprepared for the result of applying that kind of scale to the task.

Hmm with 48mb RAM and a fixed 192mb swap I can run 4 copies of delphi with a
sizable project open, Outlook Express 5 2 explorers and a find dialog... It's worth
noting
that Delphi chews an easy 12-15mb on my NT machine per instance so 4 copies
rounds out nicely to 48mb and indicates a reasonable amount loaded.... If your
expectations of your OS go beyond this level of load you should definitely be using
a proffessional OS like NT anyway... with 3 delphis loaded I was able to compile the
application...
BTW... Has anyone used D5 beta... does it weigh in under the same monster-sized,
'far too man hitdice to count' memory footprint... If I purchase and install it will
it block
out the sun this time?
