A very tough call. You have my sympathy, I have been there myself and it's
very hard indeed. Like you, I also have a very strong work ethic so the
decision here has always been black and white for me. I simply do not do
anything illegal just to help out a firm I'm working for.

I taught "Ethics and Professionalism" to computing degree students in 2002
and know the problems and the "justifications". But in the end, if an
employer asked you to rob the bank and told you that you would lose your
job if you didn't, what wuold be your decision?

Although using illegal software and robbing a bank is not the same, both
are illegal acts, both are punishable by law, and both would put a criminal
record of theft against you (that's you, not just the boss), and both carry
a hefty fine or prison sentence.

You must make your decision and I do not envy that. I've also been out of
work and broke so know what that's like.
