Today - with $1.45 in available cash and no food in the house - ummmm
where was that bank?

Screw anonymity, take the $5k.

They put you in a situation of having to choose between you or them and
expect you to look after them? What are you their mama? Do they want you
to wipe their tears when the mean men take the software away, too?

(Yeah, I actually do appreciate that its not actually that easy - that
you'd probably have to see some of the staff around town and I'm
guessing you could lose a friend or two, but still...)

I know you can't eat it, but it seems you've just earned a lot
of respect round here - I don't have any say in hiring
(and damn, if I was I'd have an offer your way pretty damn smartly),
but there *are* still places where your honesty is reason enough for
hiring. To be perfectly francis, speaking purely from a code-cutting
perspective, I could really give a toss about ethics (as in eg, they
put you in a situation where you have $5k by doing one thing and
going hungry doing another, is to me a financial rather than ethical
question), but honesty is one of *the* most important attributes.
(WTF? It's hardcoded? No wonder you finished that job in a week! Does
anyone else know this? So the junior dev. has to fix it? By tomorrow?)

Anyway, don't let this go by without getting a paragraph or 2 from
someone (esp. with a fancy title - any Business Development Managers
or Senior Architects listening?) to go on your CV / contracting
material.

Cheers, Kurt.
