I don't know how I'd feel taking the $5k - would it be morally right? - does it matter? Would it be like signing your soul away to the devil?

Well, to expand on what I said above, once morality or ethics are
the deciding factors, there isn't a chance of a *win*.
But, yup, for the next 5k, sell.
(Although, having dependants probably pushes me this way quicker than it once would've).
Buy it back when you've got 500k. (Or don't and hope you go to the cool
part of hell, with Bon Scott and Brian Jones and John Lennon and them).

It feels like a big brother kind of thing, I also suspect that the $5k is more to get the people producing pirated copies of software.

Dude, you're programming, you *are* big brother. But, no, the money is explicitly intended for this situation. (and yeah, karma and what goes around comes around and no good deed goes unpunished and all of that applies).

Plus I don't think you'd get it. I suspect that it would have to go to court for you to get it and I suspect that M$ would say "register or else", your employer would say "ok, we'll register" and you'd be left without a job and without your $5k.

No, the choice was between : (not enough work + anonymity) and (no ongoing work + non-anonymity + $5k).

If you aren't going to get it, it's a different choice to make.

Cheers, Kurt.
