Thanks for that,

In March Microsoft produced a security update cd with all the updates for
windoze xp,me,98se,98 oses upto feb -free if you order off there web site.
We also preinstall zone alarm & avg or norton internet security before
connecting to the internet. Downloading the updates to nortons on a secure
machine and update the new machine. I have now got a dynalink adsl modem
with firewall pretty well locked down to ensure that the machine gets upto
date safely. looking forward to septs PC world with xp sp2 on it and then i
will update all my windoze machines now i have updated nero.

There are two solutions...

1) Download SP1 and other updates and drop them on a CD-RW for when you
have to reinstall next

2) Use a network connection and NAT (ICS will do) to connect a fresh
install to Windows Update

I use option 2 when I'm setting up computers for others. It doesn't
happen all that often, but it means no external access to the machine
while it does updates. Since my main machine is reasonably secure, no
problems.
