Hello,
I'd like to ask a question.
We have a number of people at Sun/Solaris and AMD working on various
AMD-related enhancements to Solaris. There are also a few projects under
consideration, in particular a project to support AMD's IOMMU, which we
are already starting to work on.
We would like to provide some sort of structure to these efforts and
OpenSolaris looks like a good venue for that.
We have been discussing a number of options:
- Treat each project as a separate effort and simply find an
appropriate community to sponsor it
- Create an AMD community which would (co)-sponsor various
projects.
- Create an umbrella AMD project and then have sub-projects
under it.
The first option appears to be the easiest but, at least from my
perspective, it does not provide any "unifying" structure to AMD-related
work. For example, after a new CPU is introduced, it may be difficult to
find out whether a particular feature is addressed -- you'd have to
first figure out which community/project would be the most relevant, and
that's often not easy. Besides, certain features may not be worth a
whole project, but people might still be interested in its status (or
have a place to discuss it).
We are leaning toward the second or third option, although it is not
clear whether the third option is even a possibility under the current
rules.
I would be interested to hear from people on this alias what should be
the preferred route to take.
Thanks.
