What sorts of projects would an x86/64 community endorse? How would it direct them? I can understand a platform community, because the projects it would endorse are those that allow one to run OpenSolaris on a particular platform. That would include common drivers (VM, memory management, console access, and booting, for a few examples) and kernel portability issues. Other things not related to the platform itself -- such as networking and video drivers -- would be done elsewhere. The lines seem fairly clear to me. Would an x86/64 community also endorse application level projects? > I still think we all need to encourage projects around > technologies/value-add rather than around platforms. Perhaps I'm being dense, but I think that writing code that makes OpenSolaris run on a platform does sound like a valid technology area. > Do you see any > issue with proposing a IOMMU project outside of a particular platform's > project space? No, particularly if there are common problems to be solved. -- James Carlson, Solaris Networking <james.d.carlson at sun.com> Sun Microsystems / 35 Network Drive 71.232W Vox +1 781 442 2084 MS UBUR02-212 / Burlington MA 01803-2757 42.496N Fax +1 781 442 1677
