I heard (and, I hope, helped squelch) a similar rumor yesterday. An
industry media person called to ask if I'd heard anything about threatening
letters from WotC or something, and that WotC wasn't going to do the D20STL
after all now that Ryan has moved jobs.
I said I had heard nothing of the sort, but that maybe the rumor started
from a concatenation of items: Ryan's note of caution (along the lines of:
hey remember the D20 license isn't final yet, so be careful with what you
publish because the final terms of the license may not be what the terms are
now in the draft), and not long thereafter Ryan's move to Special Projects.
Throw in tales on RPG.net about WotC stores holding the CC until MM's
release date. Mix well, add a few pinches of speculation, and bring to a
simmer over the ongoing game industry-wide game of "telephone," and you've
got a hot & spicy rumor to serve!
The person who called me figured that if cease-and-desists were going out,
Atlas too would be on the receiving end. And, of course, we've gotten no
such notice -- and as far as I can tell, WW too has had nothing but public
praise (witness Ryan's positive comments when the book was announced) from
WotC.
