Did you know that a oar costs the exact same amount as an chest or a bit 
and bridle?

If a thief fenced a stolen oar he could buy an inkpen, four sheets of 
parchment, a vial of ink, and a bedroll.  If he stole a second oar, he 
could also buy a bottle of wine and call himself an author.


My conclusion is that it's best not to think to hard about the prices in 
the PHB.  They are designed for the epic high fantasy adventurers who have 
sacks of gold after looting and pillaging dungeons, and not realistic 
economics.
