Also, the specifics of a number of books (including Palpatines clones) have
implied its a physical rather than a 'spiritual' trait.
That said I don't like it per se. However there are hints around that the
midi-chlorian is just one interpretation of how 'we' interact with the
Force. Its something you can expect to see more of in the next two movies.
