Midichlorians aren't the best idea Lucas ever came up with, but they're hardly
the worst. Technology and magic are basically the same thing -- separated by
knowledge. Back in the good old days, the Jedi knew all about the little things,
but by the time it was just Ben and Yoda around, it wasn't so important any
more. And who wants to take the time to explain to a farmer boy from a backwater
planet that he has Midichlorians in his blood? it's much more impressive to talk
about the Force being in all things, in all places.
Everyone assumes that the Midichlorian thing destroys the nature of the Force,
but it doesn't. It's actually pretty much in line with theories about how
everyone is connected, we are all part of the same energy, etc. Some people have
more juice in the battery than others. Anakin just happens to be a larger
battery than most.
Lightsabers and blasters use the same energy to function. You don't need a
mysterious magical Force to make either of them special. It's all just energy.

"Moralists have always wondered helplessly why Poe's 'morbid' tales need
have been written. They need to be written because old things need to die
and disintegrate, because the old write psyche has to be gradually broken
down before anything else can come to pass. Man must be stripped even of
himself. And it is a painful, sometimes a ghastly process."
