Thanks for the nice work on ROM over all these years.
A possible scenario could be a network of people build "D20 MUDs"
and a different network of people build "character creation and
advancement web apps". As long as the two networks of people agree
on a protocol and guidelines, the mud itself will just load up
characters created on the web app. Characters can earn some
"rewards" while playing on the mud which they can later spend
on the web app for advancement.
You can have various options and settings like
-whether your mud will accept characters that have played on other muds
-whether players can petition to have their characters from another mud
reviewed/converted for play on your mud
-etc.
