Not neccessarily. I have also often seen stats included in various 
types of boxes or sidebars. Optional material is most often marked 
at the top with the word "Optional"

Yeah, and as a consumer, I always hated that sort of thing. Having 
to flip through a book to find a creature who is listed solely by 
name. On the other hand, listing stats along side of the 
description, and then again in an appendix may be useful if a 
consumer wanted to remove it from a book in order to keep a 
collection of such things in a single place
