My SWAG (Scientific Wild-Assed Guess) is that openldap may use sasl to implement secure connections. On the other hand, the apache-1.3.27-2003061 apache.spec file defines LIBS to use ``-lsasl2'' if the php_ldap option is selected even if openldap isn't compiled with sasl support. This causes the mod_php configure script to break saying that the C compiler doesn't work if sasl isn't installed on the system regardless of the fact that openldap isn't configured to use it.
