My SWAG (Scientific Wild-Assed Guess) is that openldap may use sasl to
implement secure connections.

On the other hand, the apache-1.3.27-2003061 apache.spec file defines LIBS
to use ``-lsasl2'' if the php_ldap option is selected even if openldap
isn't compiled with sasl support.  This causes the mod_php configure script
to break saying that the C compiler doesn't work if sasl isn't installed on
the system regardless of the fact that openldap isn't configured to use it.
