I "fixed" the problem. There seems to be a bug in the configure script, it
was failing a long 'if' condition that would set the OPENSSL path to
whatever is provided in --with-openssl, so I just hardcoded it outside the
if statement:

                SSL_MSG="yes"
                ssldir="$withval"

..and later:

                ENGINE_MSG=yes
                ENGINE_LINK="$LIBCRYPTO"

(these lines are already in the configure script, I just added them outside
of any if conditions)
