Hey all,
I have been developing an application for orkut , i
have looked at other networks too and i know each and everyone of them have
a niche of users with their own set of preferences, but orkut users and
their preferences are totally out of my understanding.
Since orkut does not allow multiple invitations, and from what i understand
the number of news feeds per user per day for an application is also limited
(of course for better user experience), but as a developer how do you
approach this ? I mean the stats in the application directory have
absolutely baffled me, there are apps with hundreds of thousands of install
and mere hundreds of weekly active users ?
For example the current listing in app directory as of 1st September 11:03
AM GMT,
1) Ask Friends : Installs - 21633162
usage/wk - 7643 users
2) MindJolt Games : Installs 1057557
usage/wk - 771 users
and so on..
I mean i cannot understand why the apps with hundreds of hours of
development and refinement seem to unable to retain users ?
Is something missing from the developer's who are unable to understand the
requirements and fill those loop holes or is just the strictness of orkut as
platform to allow more viral behavior of applications ?
I once heard a successful app developer on facebook say once that for every
one app user you should get at least get 1.2 more users by invitation or
viral feed. They got notifications too, so every time new levels are added
to game the user gets notification saying "Hey we got new stuff! check it
out !"
I am totally confused on how to make applications viral on network as
populous as orkut and yet it's user base remains most unreachable for most
developers.
I would really appreciate if other developers can share their experience of
developing and running apps. And may be any tips on understanding users
better and reaching them.
