It is not rubbish; Bryan's comment is spot on given the constraints
under which he is operating, which you appear not to be operating under.
As long as `uname -r | cut -c1` reports "5", then Bryan's comment is
accurate, whereas you seem to be coming at this from the more abstract
"it could be anything" point of view.  Now, whether or not to change it
to "6" (or whatever) may be a business problem, but as long as it *is*
"5", then various compatibility constraints are a technical problem.
