I'd argue that leads to a completely unmaintainable set of sources, unless the individual maintainer knows exactly what they're doing. Far easier to have the original source, and a collection of patches - especially when it comes to bumping the component version. I've heard of some people being able to manage this through their favorite SCM, but it doesn't really encourage the necessary 2-way communication between vendor and original upstream community, IMHO.
