That is not the approach that was taken when GNU tar was integrated as `gtar`, was it? You probably (I hope) didn't mean this the way you wrote it, because it comes off as: "if we don't ship it, it doesn't exist" and, just because (Open)Solaris isn't shipping something today, that does not mean it won't be shipping that something tomorrow, which is why I believe you probably didn't mean it that way; the way you put it is unfortunate.
