You have probably found by now that rebooting makes the update notification go away.
When you update 'entire' you create a new boot environment in which the update gets installed, but there is no automatic switch to this new boot environment. You have to reboot the machine and select the newly created boot environment. Yes, it is less user friendly than Windows in that it does not tell you that you need to reboot. Note that updating 'entire' is a special case.
