- because it would be fun to write your own app  
- sense of accomplishment
- you'd get a better handle on the language knowing
it's strength and weaknesses
etc...

Not saying that you should go and write your own dbms
or word processor or OS.  But sometimes writing a
little utility from scratch is more rewarding than
downloading a pre-packaged app.
