And if you don't have a such file you can adjust your mixer settings by
hand on the command line as follow :
aumix -w 100 
aumix -v 100

The first line adjust the pcm setting and the second the global volume
setting.
the following line will give you the state of the mixer :
aumix -q
and I think aumix -h will give you all the possible settings you can
adjust.
