I don't think this is an accurate representation of MySQL's history. You should have attended David Axmark's talk on Sunday morning where one can be humbled at how MySQL was basically built from ground up (ie from nothing) and without understanding or asking for funding etc. Getting paid at the start of the project is always good but it is not a necessary condition to run a project or build great software.
