Thank you Artur. Brilliant article! Lots of juicy details for sure, but the
best part, I think, is what the authors can’t say (describe), but only point to
– the nature and quality of The Toyota Space, which they refer to as “culture.”
The “magic sauce” is not to be found in all the steps and processes – but in
what happens in between. Particularly insightful is their (authors)
identification of paradox as a central phenomena in Toyota Space. Paradoxes
open space. Honoring paradox keeps the space open – and growing. Masterful.

Hi Carolina,

Alas, a tardy reply. Perhaps it will be useful. The literature around
participatory leadership in Lean Manufacturing and Toyota in particular is vast
and extensive. There are many voices, and nothing is particularly short and
profound at the same time.

There is one voice teaching in the lean and agile communities that I find
willing to challenge my thinking - and this post is one of the clearest I've
seen about problems with the term leadership and inherent dysfunctions -
especially in knowledge work:

http://flowchainsensei.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/leadership-or-fellowship/

This is also one of the most profound benefits I've found in Open Space. That
it fosters fellowship dramatically by allowing people to self-organize based on
affinity. Leaders implies followers. Following implies allowing the leader to
do the thinking - which is a great waste of our sacred gray matter.

    Cheers,
    Harold

Yes, it is fun to co-create a session about leadership.

Due to my background I call it genuine leadership - but I guess authentic

I like the clarification around wisdom of the whole.

And I love how this list expresses and lives it.

I pass your wisdom on...

Maybe my friend (and guinea pig) will join this circle as a result of your

Hello Anna Carolina!

I can recommend the work of Joseph A. Raelin. One interesting book with good
examples is: Creating Leaderful organizations. How to brig out leadership in
everyone.

I´ve been working a bit with Realins approach, and his word " leaderful". It
suggest that shared leadership bring out more leadership, not less, as many
will suppose ( leaderless)

Open Space is a key for me to understand how this can actually work.

Anna -- Sounds like a marvelous new adventure. Doubtless you will find some
great stories and thinking in the writings of Marv Weisbord and Eric Trist.
Eric was before my time, and Marv is an old friend. But I think you may have
(your "guinea pig may have) two separate interests here: Participatory
Leadership and Wisdom of the Whole. Of course they could be the same thing,
but typically people like Trist and Weisbord understood Leadership to be
more or less equated with the Formal Leadership of an organization, and the
effort was to help them (The Leaders) share their task. But there was never
any question as to Who the Leader(s) was.

"Wisdom of the Whole," seems to me, come from a very different place.
Leadership in that situation is understood to be a function or a role that
may in fact be performed by anybody and (over time) everybody. And
Leadership is never to be limited to, or equated with the Formal Leaders.
Many people would see this as a confusing, perhaps revolutionary thought.
After all things could get out of hand, confused, to say nothing of chaotic.
Might we say, Out of Control!

This, of course, is precisely the problem (opportunity) lots of folks have
with Open Space, especially when they just hear about it. After all, nobody
is in charge. Everybody is -- And that, I think is real Participatory
Leadership. Leadership is not something to be shared, if only because it is
the possession and birthright of everybody. No need for a share of something
you already possess!

To me, this takes us to the heart of the lesson from Open Space. Sure it is
a nice meeting methodology, a "tool" for group work, a "process, if you
will... but that is just the beginning, and a very small beginning. At the
end of the day it (OS) is an experience of, and training in real leadership
-- What I have called Authentic Leadership.

And of course, I just happen to have written a book that explains all this:
"Wave Rider: Leadership for High Performance in a Transforming World" :-)

Dear all,

I am just experimenting with a leadership coaching program.
And my guinea pig wants more information about participatory leadership -
wisdom of the whole… I remember all the stories about Toyota and other car
industry that changed their productivity by involving all workers.

Can you link me with short and profound articles?
Or links?

Would be very much appreciated!

much Love from Berlin,
AC*
