Artur ... no doubt Gleick missed a beat ... to say nothing of one of the most critical players in the emerging understanding of Self Organization. That said, James is a marvelous writer, and the stories he does tell are (I think) superbly done. As it happens, I was personally connected to one or two of them, and his descriptions and my experience correlate highly. So I would say read him for what he wrote, and forgive the rest.

(I don't know if there is an English translation: as I only find it in French, Spanish and Italian...). They are both written by a Physicist and an Anthropologist, but are written for the lay person. And, yes, “At home in the Universe” by Kauffmann is a must, even if more complex. I have many doubts about Gleick's book on "Chaos", as there is not even a single reference to Prigogine. He is not even mentioned in the entire book. It is like writing about "The Evolution of the Species" without referring Darwin... That said, there are three books that I found to be most helpful, and all – to the best of my knowledge – are still in print. In historical order they are: “Order out of Chaos,” Ilya Prigogine, “Chaos,” James Gleick, and “At home in the Universe” Stuart Kauffmann.
