… it was not long ago, i facilitated an open space for a large group of circles
… among the group were just a few triangles, not so many. i had the impression
at first everything really went fine. during the evening circle a circle
mentioned how well the circles went with this strange new approach, however for
the triangles it was just not adequate and needed be adjusted, the corners just
did not go so well with the curves. i stayed up all night trying to figure out
how to triangulate the circles or circle the triangles … and guess what, I
found the solution, simple and perfect. as i announced my new break-through the
next morning … i happened to notice an additional, new participant amongst them
… a square! i was shocked, i had to ask the group for a 15 minute break … I
needed to retreat to come up with a solution … after 20 minutes I came back,
with the solution, i am a professional! … i found the group working,
peacefully, circles with triangles, triangles with the square, laughing with
the circles … i have no idea how these ordinary circles, triangles and square
managed to triangulate, circle and square themselves …

Dear friends in Open Space

My experience is that many of the people who step up in an Open Space-meeting
are often the ones that don’t “take space” otherwise – as that is the way to
get air time in most meetings. But when they are honestly invited and given
whatever time they need and also when the invitation is connected to taking
responsibility for something dear to you, then they are more likely to step up.
And I guess why many extroverts remain speechless is that they get so
overwhelmed by the wide open space, not having to “take the word”…

And what would happen, I wonder, if you did fully participate?

I can say that for me, it is one reason I have been hesitant to fully
participate in open space.

I had an interesting chat a few days ago with someone that identifies as an
introvert. They made this statement which has me somewhat confused and
perplexed - "Introverts do not like Open Space".

Now - I know that for the broadest definition of an introvert that is not true.
Because I myself am an introvert and I love Open Space. Like all mental
categories, introversion I assume is on a scale. So perhaps a better statement
from this individual may have been - for more extreme introverts, Open Space
can be uncomfortable and is not viewed as a safe environment for me to express
myself. (I need to run this statement by said individual to see if they can
confirm if this statement better represents their intention.)

Is this indeed true however? It is at least for one person I know. So my
questions are:

- has anyone else encountered this opinion?

- If so, what percentage of the average population do you think would feel this
way?

- Is there anything we can do to make these extreme introverts to feel
comfortable and safe to share?

Any thoughts and advice appreciated.
