For a completely left field answer, I've been enjoying
playing with the hackability of the ability to load custom firmware
into my Canon Powershot. I didn't choose the camera (it is my wifes
discard now I have got her a DSLR), but its proved to be heaps of
fun. It lets you do things like add time lapse scripts, use motion
detection, super fast exposures, scripted bracketing of shots etc

Anything similar for other camera brands? Or am I always
going to want to have a Canon digic 2/3 camera around?
