If you are looking to spend no more than around 300 bucks, it might be
worth ignoring numbers of megapixels and zoom factors and picking a
camera that you "like" in terms of looks and feel and the menu
structure - especially where the controls that you are likely to need
often are buried (ISO, Flash and WB settings ?). At this price level,
its going to be a point and shoot in the realest sense and the more
advertising features the thing has, the more weaknesses its likely to
have. I'd go for a standard-ish zoom like something around the 35 to
105 range - I'm not sure that something that goes down to 24, or 28 is
going to work well enough at this price level - but I might be wrong)
and I'd pick something from Canon, or Sony (if you don't disklike
Memory Sticks) that starts up fast, writes fast (and, or has a decent
frame buffer), doesn't have disastrous noise at ISO 400 (which rules
Lumix out I suspect) and has good battery life and either an excellent
display and/or a useable viewfinder.

If you are prepared to spend a bit more money and a bit more time
shooting, the favorites become Lumix, Ricoh, Sigma (though I'd wait
for the Sigma DP2 rather than blasting on a DP1), perhaps still Canon
and (eventually) Nikon.

Mark.
