Yes Deb you are right

The study by the same authors which links nitrous use in labour and amphetamine addiction in offspring is
'Obstetric pain medication and eventual adult amphetamine addiction in offspring' Jacobsen et al, Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand 67: 677-682, 1988

A further study  based on the same subject  links socio economic factors at birth along with opiate, barbiturate and nitrous use in labour with addictive behaviours in the offspring. For interest this reference is

'Socio economic versus obstetric risk factors for drug addiction in offspring'  Nyberg K, Allebeck P, Eklund G, Jacobsen B, British Journal of Addiction (1992) 87, 1669-1676

Hope this helps

Kathy, the reference for the research Mary refers to above is:

'Opiate addiction in adult offspring through possible imprinting after obstetric treatment'
Jacobson, Nyberg, Gronbladh, Eklund, Bygdeman and Rydberg (1990); BMJ Vol 301 pp 1067-1070. (BMJ 1990:301:1067-70)

I may be totally wrong about this,  but is this the study that links pethidine in labour with later opiate amongst adults?  I know there is a Swedish study which postulates this link, but can't find my notes on this.  I didn't realise that it also llinks entenox with amphetamine addiction.
